- Most crimes occur during the day when people are at work.
- Most often criminals gain entrance through the back door of the home by kicking it in
- Having a home security system yard sign you're three times less likely to be the victim of a home burglary.
- Leaving a front door patio light on during the day tells everyone “I'm not at home”
- Leaving mail or packages sticking out of a mail slot or on the front porch tells everyone “I'm not at home”
- Burglaries are crimes of opportunity always lock your front, back and side doors when you are home or away. Lock any shed or garage doors you have. Also lock your windows when you leave your home. Do not keep windows open when you are away from your house.
- Criminals pick on people who they perceive as weak. I've been to many elderly people's homes as well as disabled people homes who have been broken into. I met one disabled man who watched criminals rob him during the day. The criminals broke into his shed and stole his lawnmower in front of him. He said they looked at him while they were in the act. He was shocked called the police but the criminals were gone by the time the police arrived. If you are elderly or disabled purchase an air-horn, powerful flashlight, motion lights, panic button attached to a home security system, home security system, a dog (even a small dog will ward off intruders), and if you have the full use of your hands you might want to look into pepper spay but make sure you get training on how to use it properly.
- When criminals are successful they come back. I've been to many homes and neighborhoods where criminals have been successful, then come back to the same neighborhood and even the same house. Once I met an elderly woman whose home was broken into three times within a week. Three of her neighbors homes were also broken into on the same street within a week. She was so upset she moved and sold her home. If criminals have been successful breaking into your home or a neighbors be vigilant, get a home security system with yard signs and decals, start a neighborhood watch, keep close watch on your neighbors homes and ask those neighbors you have a close relationship with and trust to watch yours.
